MDM Motorsports has announced that Tyler Matthews, 21, of Richlands, North Carolina will pilot the team’s No. 99 Chevrolet NASCAR Camping World Series truck in Saturday’s Alpha Energy Solutions 250 at Martinsville Speedway. Popeye’s, BB&T and Twin County Motorsports will provide support for the team’s efforts this weekend.
Matthews, 21, will be making his first start in the series and his first start with the team. The steadily rising racer has progressed from cutting his teeth in ATV’s and U-Cars to earning NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina State Rookie of the Year honors in 2015. He won the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina state championship in 2016 and the late model track championship at Swansboro, North Carolina’s Carteret County Speedway in 2017.
Following his first test session with MDM Motorsports, Matthews was excited for this weekend’s race. “I feel like we had a really positive test last week. The biggest takeaway for me was how much more important it is to take care of the brakes with the truck compared to what I’m used to with the late model at Martinsville. I’m really looking forward to going through my first race weekend with Shane (Huffman) and the MDM Motorsports team. It is a winning team. My goal is just to be smart, learn as much as I can and complete all the laps.”
Crew Chief Huffman was impressed with Matthews during the test. “Tyler performed well. We’re excited to get back into truck series competition. We always want to go out and run for wins, but if we can qualify in the top ten and race there all day, that will be a productive day for us and for Tyler. All of us at MDM Motorsports are looking forward to getting on the track at Martinsville.”
The Alpha Energy Services 250 gets the green flag from Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia at 2pm Eastern on Saturday afternoon. Television coverage will be provided by Fox Sports 1. The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will provide radio coverage.
