MDM Motorsports ARCA racers Sheldon Creed, Zane Smith and Chase Purdy are preparing for this Saturday night’s Sioux Chief PowerPEX 250 at Elko Speedway in Elko, Minnesota.
Creed leads Smith by 200 points in the overall series championship standings going into this weekend’s contest, while Smith sits atop the standings in the Sioux Chief Short Track Challenge, leading his teammate Purdy by 75 points.
The short track challenge is a separate entity from the overall series championship in that it only counts points for the tracks under a mile in length and crowns a separate champion just for that part of the schedule.
Overall, MDM is the hottest team in the series, with Creed and Smith each winning three times so far while both Harrison Burton and Brandon Jones have one win apiece for a total of eight wins out of the twelve races run so far.
Creed has enjoyed a banner season so far with the United Rentals, A.M Ortega, RTL Toyota No. 28 led by crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz, but he knows there is room for improvement in the short-track game and he’s ready to get after it at Elko.
“Short tracks haven’t been our strongest point this year,” Creed confirmed. “I’m not as good at them as some of my teammates or competitors are. We’ve been good, but not great. We’ll attack it just like every other weekend, doing our best to improve and gain as many points as we can. The championship is our main goal.”
Smith has two short-track wins this year and the La Paz Margarita Mix, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, Speed Vegas Motorsports Toyota No. 41 team led by crew chief Mardy Lindley has been in the thick of things consistently at the smaller venues. Smith also has a bit of extra incentive to take the flag this weekend.
“I almost had this race won last year,” he explained. “You never want to say a track owes you one, but let’s just say I’m really looking forward to going back and getting it done this time around.”
Purdy is also confident going into the weekend with his Bama Buggies, Polaris Toyota No. 8 because the shorter tracks play to his background and strength. “I’m excited to get back on a short track,” he nodded. “The speedways have been strong as of late, but I feel like we’ve been the strongest on the short tracks so far. We’re right there and I think Elko is the kind of place that will put us over the top and get us our first win.”
The Sioux Chief PowerPEX 150 is scheduled to take the green at 9 pm Central time this Saturday, July 14. The race will be televised on MAVtv.
