ARCA Racing Series points leader Sheldon Creed, ARCA Short Track Points Champion Zane Smith and rising stars Chase Purdy and Harrison Burton will wheel Toyotas for MDM Motorsports in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers Fall Classic this Saturday night at Salem Speedway in Salem, Indiana.
This race has the added significance of being the series “throwback” race where several drivers will have a paint scheme on their car representing a driver from years past in one series or another.
Creed has three wins this season and is also the series championship points leader in his United Rentals, A.M Ortega, RTL Toyota No. 28 led by crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz. The former X-Games Gold Medalist is ready to take on the challenging short-track this weekend. His chosen throwback is to a multi-time Daytona 500 winner’s livery.
“We worked really hard on this throwback deal and it came out pretty cool,” he said proudly. “Trying to keep the Ranier Racing lineage going, we landed on Cale Yarborough’s Hardees 28 paint scheme. It’s pretty sweet to bring back an old-time sponsor like this.”
The scheme is not just a tribute. Hardees is actually sponsoring Creed for this race.
Smith has four victories so far this season in the La Paz Margarita Mix, Icon Vehicle Dynamics, Speed Vegas Motorsports Toyota No. 41 team led by crew chief Mardy Lindley. and he just wrapped up the CGS Imaging 4 Crown Championship on Labor Day at DuQuoin with his fifth-place finish.
This championship celebrates versatility and was comprised of best finishes at Talladega, Madison, Pocono, and DuQuoin. Smith won at Talladega and Pocono and his finishes at Madison and DuQuoin were well enough to clinch him the 4 Crown Championship.
“We’ve been good at this place the past two races,” Smith said. “Which is a huge positive for us heading into the weekend. We need another strong run to turn into a win on Saturday.”
Purdy’s scheme on his Bama Buggies / Polaris Toyota No. 8. will also be a bit of a personal one for a
member of the MDM Motorsports team, and specifically his crew chief Mark McFarland’s 2006 NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Navy paint scheme that Mark drove when he was racing for JR. Motorsports.
He is currently fifth in the championship standings and would love nothing more than to steer McFarland’s colors straight into victory lane.
“I think it’ll be a really neat deal,” Purdy smiled. “I am sure it will be a special moment for Mark as well as for me, to honor him and his success with that scheme. It would really mean a lot to all of us if we could get the win with it on Saturday.
Burton, the son of NASCAR legend Jeff Burton, is really humbled by the opportunity to pay tribute to his father by running his early late model livery on the Dex Imaging, Safelite, Mobil 1 No. 12 this weekend.
“I am so excited for this race,” Harrison nodded. “I look up to my Dad a lot like of other racers do, but to have run his original number as long as I’ve been able to and not have it look just like his late model is awesome. It would be so much fun to win with that scheme.”
The Kentuckiana Ford Dealers Fall Classic at Salem Speedway is scheduled to take the green at 9:15 pm Eastern time this Saturday, September 15th. The race will be televised on MAVtv.
